Lost Planet: Extreme Condition

Posted on Apr 23, 2008 under sony playstation | No Comment

Ugly monsters! Giant robots! Charming tin hats! Welcome to the frozen wastes of Capcom’s Lost Planet: Extreme Condition. Set in the brutal frozen tundra of a hostile planet the game pits players against giant ugly indigenous creatures and invading nasties. You take on the role of Wayne Holden rescued from a veil of ice with only fragments of his memory remaining. What he does remember is the slaying of his father at the hands of the monstrous beings. With only the Snow Pirates the native Akrid and the mysterious NEVEC corporation left on the planet you must work out who to trust and battle for survival. Working on foot and with your VS (Vital Suit a giant mechanical armour-type-thing) you must navigate the world hunting for answers. In addition to fighting the assorted giant monsters and other nastiness players must also battle the cold. By killing the Akrid players can extract minerals from their bodies in order to stay alive. Lost Planet producer Keiji Inafune has claimed the game is his answer to Halo. Big words indeed but with the development team behind Onimusha and Devil May Cry working on the game Lost Planet might just prove Inafune right. The game attracted a lot of heat ahead of its original 360 release with the demo hitting the one million download mark and now it’s been around for a year or so on the Microsoft console finally the Sony faithful can see what all the fuss was about. Players get the opportunity to ‘chill out’ online with a multiplayer mode that will allow up to 16 players to duke it out. There are four modes to choose from: Elimination (a deathmatch); Team Elimination (you guessed it - a deathmatch in teams); Post Grab (grab as many posts as possible); and Fugitive Hunt (which pits one player against the others). All very chilling stuff.

NHL 08

Posted on Apr 23, 2008 under sony playstation | No Comment

It’s time to take to the ice again for this years ice hockey offering from EA: NHL 08. Where in previous years EA has attempted to hark back to the glory days of the mid 90s and its early arcade flair this time the company has gone for as close a simulation of true NHL as it can. Hockey aficionados will find an improved AI in the game that will make opponents much smarter. In offence it will spread the defence and charge rebounds. In defence it will block passing lanes and clear the puck. In other words if your style of play is to break down the ice and hope for a break you’re in for a shock. Don’t worry though: you haven’t just been left against a superior AI with no way to counteract it. There’s a new create-a-play mode that allows players to establish up to 70 plays in advance so you’ll know exactly what your team mates are about to do and play accordingly. Another new addition is Goalie mode which puts you in the net for the entire game looking out from behind his mask. Goaltending’s hard work however and if it gets too much you can switch out of it at any time to get back out onto the rink.

Lost

Posted on Apr 23, 2008 under sony playstation | No Comment

Oceanic Flight 815 out of Sydney Australia is mysteriously brought down out of the sky and crashes on an uncharted island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. The survivors quickly learn they must band together in order to have any chance of rescue because the island is treacherous and holds many secrets. And as they will soon find out the survivors have secrets of their own. Like the other castaways the lead character in the game has a shady past that has brought him to the island and he must redeem himself in order to find a way home. At the beginning of the game the photojournalist is suffering from amnesia and needs to find out who he is through playable flashbacks interacting with other castaways and exploring the island. Talking to the other castaways is vital for your survival and helping you to find out who you are and how you got there. As you approach someone you’ll be able to initiate a conversation if the appropriate button appears. When you enter into a dialogue with a survivor you’ll have a selection of categories and subjects to talk about. Pay careful attention to what they have to offer and they might just point you in the right direction. Your inventory is also important and comes in the form of an on-screen backpack. Valuable items such as coconuts and bottles of water are collectible and can be made available for trading purposes. You are on a secluded island after all and cash money is no use at all. Certain characters - especially Sawyer - are very astute at trading and can usually help you out…at a ‘price’. Lost couldn’t possibly follow the path trodden by the television series: it’s too convoluted by far but the game does a fair job of invoking the impression of uncertainty and looming dread that TV watchers will be familiar with. Whether viewers will take to the videogame and its genuinely immersive atmosphere remains to be seen. If you want to relive the early days of Lost this gives you the chance to be a virtual survivor without getting sand between your toes while still having to sort out the puzzles and mysteries that the island offers.
