The classic 2D arcade game although now a little aged is still a desirable genre even in the 21st century. More importantly titles like 1942 and other games in the top-down shooting perspective were among the most popular. Because of the GameBoy Color’s limited 2D technologies the platform is almost perfectly suited to games of this type and as such SCi has produced SWIV. To begin with the plot line for such a simple game is actually quite diverse and involving. A mysterious race originating from the mid-Atlantic has developed a world class military force. Concerned of the risk of a forthcoming World War your task is to destroy the threat. What’s more it’s as challenging as it sounds. When beginning a game you will have the choice to control either a chopper or a tank. Strangely both handle identically and as such this option has literally no effect on the outcome of the game or any of its difficulty settings. You goal within each stage is simple to reach the end of the level and defeat each end-of-level boss without losing all your lives. Your journeys will take you across locations such as deserts jungles and volcanoes where you will be confronted with some of the most intimidating ammunition known to mankind. While SWIV does not pride itself on graphical prowess is has many great features that contribute to the overall challenge of the game. Completing the game will seem an impossible task to begin with but with addiction and practice you should find yourself a saviour of the planet in no time.
Since the launch of the original Tomb Raider back in 1996 Core Design created a phenomenon within the video games industry. Such was the success of Lara Croft and her Tomb Raiding antics that a series of successful sequels were produced. One every year in fact. Up until now Lara has only ever made a 3D appearance on Saturn PlayStation and PC. New for 2000 Lara makes her way onto GameBoy Color and in 2D. Many of you maybe wondering just how good a 2D conversion of a 3D game would work. The truth is this conversion plays entirely different to its 3D counterparts. That’s not to say that it’s a bad game. Many of you will remember Prince of Persia back in the early nineties. This is of particular reference since the game play within the two games are virtually identical the only difference being that you have guns instead of a sword. The theme however remains loyal to its predecessors. Lara can still jump climb swim and shoot through many locations throughout the world. Once again she must conquer the traps that lurk in deep deserts and temples and defeat monsters of all kinds using weapons ranging from pistols to grenade launchers. So the 2D conversion of Tomb Raider remains a faithful addition to the rest of the series. And what’s more its portable!
Pokemon Crystal is the seventh game in the Pokemon RPG series from Game Freak and is to Gold and Silver what Yellow was to Red and Blue. If this means nothing to you the following will make everything Crystal clear. Crystal is an enhanced version of Pokemon Gold and Silver and features all new Pokedex data and new puzzles. You can also play as a female trainer for the first time. The main story follows the lines of the previous Pokemon titles fairly closely in as much as you have to travel around battling and catching wild Pokemon. Once you catch a Pokemon you can train it up for battle against other trainers and work your way up the Johto league. Pokemon Crystal was due to be an online title and the first to make use of the Game Boy Mobile Adapter. This was achieved in Japan where players can trade Pokemon and enter battles and tournaments on the move. Unfortunately the Mobile Adapter was not released in Europe or America in time to make use of these features. As with previous games in the series Crystal is a game of rewarding patience. You travel the game world collecting and training and after some time you should have an array of pretty tough little pocket monsters. You can then link up with another player to see who has the strongest deck and the best tactics. Crystal can also be inserted into the Transfer Pak on the Nintendo 64 enabling you to battle all your best Pokemon in glorious 3D.
Every once in a while a game comes along that really deserves credit. Tony Hawk Pro Skater is one such game. Looking back in retrospect it seems almost silly that no one made a skateboarding game of this quality before. Skateboarding is an artform and has become one sport that manages to be cool and underground at the same time as being popular worldwide. The skill and adrenaline of Skateboarding can be found right here on your favourite handheld console. Tony Hawk has several game modes including tournament and the extremely fun half-pipe mode. Tournament mode sees you racing through the streets against three computer controlled skaters whoever has the most points at the end wins. Points are won from the time it takes to complete the course and the amount of tricks completed. In the half-pipe mode you have one minute to score as many points as you can. The best feature of the half-pipe mode is that you can link your tricks together to create high scoring combinations. It’s a balancing act between how many tricks you can do while you’re airborne and how fond you are of your face. Tony Hawk for the Gameboy Color is extremely fun and definitely worth checking out.
